MELSIG run events throughout the year at various institutions throughout the U.K focusing on podcasting in education, producing e-learning how to guides and sharing ideas on e-learning in general.
To listening to my new studio manual podcasts go to http://www.youtube.com/user/MrSdjones3#p/u. To listen to my old (and rather nonchalant sounding) studio podcasts go here:
http://www.stuartjones.org.uk/Stuart_Jones/Studio_Tutorials/Studio_Tutorials.html
These will all be replaced in time.
Click the image above to download my presentation slides.

Converting Audio Regions to a New Sampler Track
Those of you familiar with Propellerheads Recycle will be pleased to know that Logic has a similar function. As with Recycle this allows for:
1.Change the tempo without affecting pitch.
2.Change the pitch without affecting tempo.
3.Quantise drum loops (either to straighten up the timing or to change the feel).
4.Extract the timing (a groove map) from a drum loop.
5.This can then be applied to other sequenced parts or even to other loops
6.Replace individual sounds in a drum loop.
7.Edit the actual playing in the drum loop without affecting the basic feel.
8.Extract sounds from loops.

This tutorial discusses the above including a simple method to create variations on a drum loop.

Part 1: Creating the File
We begin by importing our loop. In this example, I am using an Apple drum loop which I have selected from my Apple loops library.

Next, turn on the flex function in the toolbar and select Slicing in the track header for this track. Logic will now detect all transients.

To check and amend the slice points, go into the Sample Editor by clicking the Sample Editor tab in the bottom left of the Arrange page. In the Sample Editor window select the Transient Editing Tool.

Logic’s transient edit function is very accurate for this type of work and usually no amendment are needed. However, you can delete slice points and add additional slice points by using the pencil tool in the tool box (Esc key).
Create your sample track by selecting Convert Regions to New Sampler Track in the Audio Menu.

A new drop down window will appear. From the Create Zones section, ensure Transient Markers is selected. Here, you can also name your EXS instrument and choose what note you what the MIDI trigger to begin. The default setting is shown below.

This will create a new EXS24 sampler track and chromatic MIDI template use to trigger your samples. Note that the MIDI file will begin at C-2. Click OK. The original audio file will be automatically muted. The playback from your sampler instrument will sound exactly the same as the Apple Loop.

Next click the Edit button in the top right hand corner of the EXS24. Here you will see multiple zones created by the Transient Editing Tool being triggered chromatically beginning at C-2. You will also be able to trigger these via a MIDI keyboard.

Part 2: Changing Tempo and Pitch
As far as tempo goes, your new loop will operate in much the same way as an Apple loop does by simply by changing the bpm in the transport bar. However, pitch change will take place in the EXS24. Bring up the sampler and adjust the Tune pot to obtain the desired pitch.

Part 3: Quantising
Now we have the drum loop as a MIDI file, we can quantise the MIDI part. This is particularly useful when layering sounds such as drum loops. Double click on the MIDI file in the Arrange Window to bring up the Piano Roll.

Before quantising, check the quantise value in the piano roll window. For this example I have set this to 1/32 note.

To quantise the loop you can either select all (Command+A) and hit Q on your keyboard, or hit Escape and use the Quantise tool in your tool box (number 8).
